Nursing is pivotal to the success of any form of healthcare. It is no wonder that nurses make up the bulk of the personnel in the healthcare segment. Nurses perform a variety of functions. They give bedside care to patients, assist doctors in operation theatres, keep accounts, dispense medicines and even take care of the management of hospitals at times. The work they do depends to a great extent on individual qualifications and experience. Successful nurses are of a special genre. Requisite Qualification


There is a large number of institutions offering diploma, graduate and postgraduate courses in nursing. BSc nursing is 3-4 years duration. Eligibility is 10+2 with biology, physics and chemistry. MSc in nursing is of two years duration. Eligibility is BSc in nursing. Then there is the general nursing and midwifery programme that is of three and a half years duration. The eligibility is the same as that for BSc nursing. The auxiliary nurse/ midwife course is of one and a half years duration. Eligibility is 10 th pass.


Scope


Globally life expectancies are rising and so is the level of health consciousness. The proof is the number of new corporate hospitals. This means that more senior people need to be taken care of and more hospitals to staff. Nurses can fit into a variety of healthcare functions. There are several openings both in government and private hospitals. Besides there is a great demand for Indian nurses abroad.


Remuneration


Nurses generally get a salary of Rs. 6500 to 10000 p.m in government hospitals. In private hospitals the salaries are more. Midwives get salaries of around Rs. 4000 p.m. Salaries will also depend on specific functions and experience. There is a great demand for Indian nurses abroad where salaries are relatively huge.
